A Matt Wade century not enough as Australia fall way short of target. 9WWOS Ashes

Again it was Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith who came in to do the repair job, but on this occasion it was not to be. Labuschagne was stumped after a smart piece of Jack Leach bowling, before Smith proved his cricketing mortality, when he was caught by a flying Ben Stokes at leg-slip off Broad. At that point the score was 4-85, and Australia still required more than 300 to win.

Marsh couldn't make the English pay for his let-off though, prodding a Leach delivery to short leg with his score on 24, and the team 5-148.Captain Tim Paine then joined Wade, and the pair looked settled, bringing up their 50 partnership as the score ticked over 200. Australia was halfway to their target, whilst England were halfway to having the visitors all out.

After what seemed like every ball, Archer and Wade stared each other down, waiting for the other to make a mistake, or lose their head. It was totally in the spirit of the game, but neither budged. In the end, Wade was unbeaten by Archer, who ended his spell with the quickest ball of the Test . Just after Wade reached the major milestone, Cummins nicked Stuart Broad behind for nine, with the visitors 7-244, needing 155 to win. The glimmer of hope was small, but it was still undeniably there.

Drawn series? Sure? The 5th test was there to be won with 2 days to bat. Warner was out of Test form before the SA debarkle and nothing's changed. He should be allocated to the shorter form and selectors are to have a good look at this batting lineup? Pakies arrive in Nov? ☝️🏏
