The alarm was raised when one of the family members went into a nearby bar looking scruffy and bewildered and ordered five beers. He said he hadn't been outside for nine years.

Six young adults and their father are receiving medical treatment after Dutch police acting on a tip-off discovered them locked away in a secret room at an isolated farm, officials in the Netherlands said on Tuesday.

De Groot said a 58-year-old man, not the father of the children, was arrested at the farm. His role was unclear. An employee at the bar told RTV Drenthe one of the family members, a 25-year-old man, had come in looking scruffy and bewildered with long hair and said he had not been outside for nine years.

He added: "He had long hair, a dirty beard, wore old clothes and looked confused. He said he'd never been to school and hadn't been to the barber for nine years."
