Exclusive: Every six-year-old should be able to 'move continuously' in water for five metres, according to a new swimming benchmark designed to reverse the 'shocking' fall in swimming and water safety skills among school children | juliepower

Ann Yang saw how easy it could be for a young child to fatally drown in a few seconds, even surrounded by friends and family.

"If you have a six-year-old, and your child can't swim continuously for five metres, you need to think about doing something about it quickly," urged Justin Scarr, chief executive of the Royal Life Saving Society Australia. Early school years was often when parents pulled their children out of swimming lessons to participate in other sports or to enjoy weekend birthday parties.

Research also found 83 per cent of 12-year-olds couldn't tread water for two minutes, another benchmark for that age group.

juliepower Too expensive not enough pools

juliepower Parents who know how to swim can take their kids to a public, free pool. You don't need to enroll in lessons if that's something you can't afford. Lawrie Lawrence has basic water safety instructional videos for babies. After they are more advanced you can watch YouTube and teach

juliepower I had my 25 metre certificates in dog paddle, breaststroke and backstroke by 4 years old

juliepower Swimming lessons should be compulsory at school from a young age.

juliepower Weekly swimming lessons were mandatory in our household from age 5. By the age of 7, my daughters were competent swimmers and didn’t fear water and by 12 they were outstanding. It also gave them confidence because they had learned a valuable skill. Thanks Forbes Carlile!

juliepower I made sure my kids could swim 5 metres by 2.

juliepower Maybe, just maybe, that people can't afford swimming lessons for the kids in the current economic environment created by our current government. Even though parents know the importance, sometimes there just isn't enough money.

Berlin freezes rents for five years to slow gentrificationIn 2017, Berlin ranked internationally as the only major city where property values had increased more than 20 per cent from a year earlier. While the Age cheers on ponzi/short term corporate economics that have made Australia unaffordable and paralyzed us from being able to do anything about climate change. Far too civilised. I'm trying to imagine this happening in Australia. It never would. Let the market correct itself..........scaring investors away will only create bigger problems. Governments only have so much money and without private investors the system is more like communism. You can't have it both ways.
