Australia faces the prospect of having to live with two large countries that don't share its values – India and China. However, the government keeps stressing that we share many common values with India but not China. This claim doesn’t square with reality.
Australians, however, trust India less than Morrison does. A Lowy Institute poll released last month shows only 45 per cent of the public trust New Delhi to behave responsibly, compared with 59 per cent in 2018. Trust in China has plunged further, as the Morrison government and the media highlighted its bad human rights record and alleged attempts to interfere in Australian politics.
Last September, Morrison said Australia’s values include support for “freedom from oppression and coercion”. This is not what Modi supports. Last year he abolished Kashmir’s constitutional status as an autonomous state and deployed sufficient troops to put its entire Islamic population of 6 million under effective house arrest. Many thousands of people remain in jail without trial; some have reportedly been beaten and tortured.
Although the Constitution prohibits religious discrimination, Modi has declared Hinduism to be the “superior” religion and is preparing to expel millions of Muslims from other parts of India, even though they were born, worked and voted there. Previous governments supported religious tolerance to help hold the country together.
'There is no good reason why Australia shouldn’t have solid diplomatic relations with India without ignoring its serious human rights abuses. But Morrison and Payne should drop their pretence that India shares the same human rights values as we do.' Why the grovelling?

Yes we share many values with India. India is a democracy, a member of the commonwealth and English is an official language. Plus they are an important trading partner that isn’t bullying its ideology onto us.
