Comment: 'Drop the pretense': Festival goers are old enough to say no to drugs

pill testing as a necessary and urgent public health intervention that will “contribute to keeping young people safe and informed”. “We are crying out and calling on the government to prevent any lives from being lost,” the Reason Party leader told reporters.

Rather, these mature adolescents and young adults – we should drop the pretence of childish naivety. They are casual, recreational drug users, who live an otherwise normal life. Either that or education in schools and community institutions is so woefully inadequate that teenagers can’t tell the difference between the risks involved in consuming over-the-counter paracetamol and the potentially deadly consequences of popping ecstasy pills in the middle of sweaty mosh-pit.

According to 2016 Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data, 37 per cent of people 18 or over who had used meth/amphetamines in the past 12 months experienced high or very high levels of psychological distress. Pill testing sends a message to young people that they are victims of their own drug culture, and that they cannot be expected to resist the pressure to consume drugs.

And the has been around long enough to print the truth but yet they find it difficult

Or even just don't have so much at once

'we end up with a culture in which casual drug users are immune from any moral sanction whatsoever' So just like we treat alcohol? Sounds great. When has moralising ever solved anything

Agree and they no the risks

'Furthermore, young people know the risks they take when consuming illicit substances. And, sadly, they still choose to proceed with what is manifestly destructive behaviour.' That's kind of the fucking point, Xavier.

The Catholic Solution - abstinence. No sex, no drugs. Always has worked well except for a few thousand priests. I can’t comprehend why smart young kids take dangerous drugs. Reality is they do. Telling them they are stupid doesn’t save lives.

Weak argument. Bottom line is that people want to escape and enjoy themselves. Prohibition fuels dangerous pill production. Testing and regulation the only way forward. Studies to determine safe MDMA doses would be a massive leap forward. But no govt. is brave enough to do it.

Comment: 'FO, SMH. Test, legalise, regulate.'

this ignores a main point of pill testing imo - it does not let young people off the hook, i.e. you can still be caught by police at the festival. It just acknowledges the high level of drug use at festivals despite the existing laws etc. and attempts to make it safer

So are politicians.

Isn't the idea that people a festivals etc want to be able to make an informed choice.

It's not about your age? Saying no to drugs is incomprehensible. It's never been a successful strategy and it never will be, no matter how old you are. Please consider the research, there is SO much scientific research to indicate harm reduction strategies actually work. Read it

Thankfully these drug laws work so wel and the punishments are highly effective. Almost no one has access to or uses illegal drugs in Australia.

Drugs are illegal -take them at your peril

I think we're aware they're old enough to say no but it's like climate change we can only warn them of the dangers.

Take the drug take the risk- do not take drugs at festivals

What? As adults we must have the human right to choose what to use. MDMA is inherently less risk than alcohol, the most consumed & dangerous drug at festivals. We understand you & politicians are paid by alcohol & have an agenda. The same peanuts who said tobacco was fine Auspol

Between 18-25 we think we are invincible so take drugs despite knowing the risks. Drugs enhance the experience at festivals. I’m not condoning using them but that’s just facts. Peer pressure also becomes a factor.

Well said, they are not 4 year old kids.

Exactly ......

Ive been to one music festival. lots of dogs sniffers and police in the entrance. Apparently, the attendees get so scared they take all their pills, and can easily overdose. Im unsure why anyone wants to take drugs though, my dad would have killed me if i had done that.

No joke Sherlock

How about, “Drop the pretence: if you go to Kings Cross after dark then you’re old enough to take a punch”?🤔

Reality is, some ppl find drinking fun and some ppl find other drugs fun. MDMA and EDM go hand in hand for many and hey, truth is, proper dosed, unadulterated MDMA is a great experience. Also if its made properly its less toxic than most and less harmful than booze.

Yet they still die and expect sympathy. Can’t have both

This article went from from criticising the 'political rhetoric (bordering on moral panic)' to decrying 'the dark realities of the festival narcotics culture' and 'the bacchanalian culture surrounding contemporary music festivals' I got whiplash.

An octogenarian wrote this...

This is a very good article; the article I’ve been waiting for... almost. Missing is a reminder that drugs are made and sold by ruthless, faceless criminals who don’t care if they make you ill or kill you.

But why would we

Do Australia's rural nurse practitioners get enough credit?Rural nurse practitioners are sole practice managers, writing prescriptions and referring to specialists. Are they supported enough? No they don't, because they are seen as competition by doctors, even when they work where doctors are not prepared to set up a clinic.
