A Melbourne driver who touts for passengers at Tullamarine Airport has defended the practice, saying it is the only way he can make ends meet.Hundreds of complaints have been made to Melbourne Airport by people who say they have been intimidated and harassed by drivers
Transport Matters party introduced a private member's bill in the Victorian Parliament to bring back the offence of touting Airport authorities have urged travellers to avoid taxi touters, after an increase in complaints about"aggressive","predatory" and"intimidating" behaviour. The airport is pushing to bring back laws that make touting an offence, and a private members bill aiming to reinstate the ban is currently before Parliament. But Khan Nasser said desperate taxi drivers like him were just trying to supplement their income.
Although Mr Nasser is a registered taxi driver and legally able to collect passengers from the rank, approaching travellers inside the airport is against the rules."Uber is destroying the industry, the taxi industry, the chauffeur industry and now we have no choice. That's why we're touting," he said.
It's simply 'un-Australian'
A little more awareness and less unrealistic expectations would do wonders here. Should they be doing this, no. But this country is a nanny state, enforcing laws over any inconceivable misdemeanor. This happens at JFK all the time and noone cares. Walk away! Problem solved.
The last taxi I caught, one driver took one look at my partner's guide dog and drove off, and the next had to be directed turn by turn, and still screwed it up. It's taxi drivers who killed their industry, not Uber.
Clear them out, Tourism Victoria!
Brisbane airport too.
Australian taxi’s in general are out of control and by far and away the most expensive on the planet.
Uber hasn’t ruined the industry, you’ve been long over paid, wait till driverless taxis hit the road. Taxi driving is not a life long career just like delivering pizza’s isn’t
...and just where is VICPOL whilst all this is going on?
This happened to me at Melbourne airport! I was so surprised. Thought the plane had been diverted to Bali.
They msut be breaking some law! Tow their vehicles...
Add to that taxi drivers refusing to take short fares forcing women and children to walk at night in unsafe areas.
Really looking forward to this being against the law again. Very annoying.
If enough large number of 'taxi' drivers refuse to accept airport trips it will automatically reduce the overcrowding & long queue of drivers looking for customers at airports. Better to accept other small trips in suburbs than wait for hrs at airport looking for 'killer' fare.
One of these guys started talking to me at the jetstar pickup point, offered me a ride for 50$, i knew instantly he was shifty, showed him uber app telling me it will be 30$ then he just walked off as I made a few rude comments
Another example of the companies doing nothing to eliminate the vile elements from the industry. Meanwhile the decent taxi drivers are tarred with the same brush and suffer as business spirals downwards.
It's not just Taxi drivers. Last time I went through Tullamarine, four Uber drivers approached me in an unfriendly manner before I even got to the luggage hall.
They are sharing their culture with us. 🤷♂️
MOST SUCCESSFUL MULTICULTURAL COUNTRY!
