Australian tourism operators in the Victorian coastal town of Lakes Entrance say the government’s ban on travellers has exacerbated the impact bushfires have had, leaving many struggling to make ends meet.

Mr Li says in January, when nearly all of his bookings were cancelled, he tried to do what he could to help those impacted by fires.

“The coronavirus on top of the bushfires, for us, has been a double whammy, we’re going to really struggle to cover our expenses this year. Mr Grech says his son, who helps to run the charter boat services, has been forced to get another job to help make ends meet. Owner of Miriam's Restaurant, Samantha Mahlook, says her seafood restaurant has experienced a similar downturn.

How many trillions in debt is Australia under the last three administrations? Over 400 trillion in debt? How is the economy going to recover JoshFrydenberg AlboMP?

It's not clear if local business or mainly foreign business is impacted by downturn in tourism?

Michael Li, it is time to invest in China 🇨🇳 the big dragon 🐉

Sad. But spread of Coronavirus and potential deaths wouldn’t do much for tourism either. Don’t think we can blame the govt on this one. coronavirusaustralia

If Australia becomes a hot spot for the virus the fall out will be much larger . A small amount of pain now , saves a lot of pain later . Border control is absolutely necessary & its what has kept this country a lower risk of virus.

Fuck it, just spread the coronavirus

Some interesting maths... 1.4M Chinese tourists annually (I have read) 3,800 per day Say each spends $2,000 per visit locally $7.6M per day in lost national income...$53M per week, $231M per month, $2.7B over a year. Is a total ban on Chinese tourists worth it?

So what? You'd prefer no precautions were taken?

Pandemics are one thing. Every precaution is essential. Bushfires another ...but the warmer, drier conditions you'd expect from an extra degree of global heat are also something we can control. The lifestyles of many of us in the wealthier parts of the world *do* have to change.
