With every passing day, there is a growing risk the widening geopolitical scope of the conflict in Ukraine may drag in more countries - bringing with it the risk of a large European war, writes Dr. Alexey Muraviev.

But while the lion share of Western media continues to portray the failures of Russia’s aggression, it is important to offer a more realistic assessment of the conflict so far.

Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine are now roughly comparable to an area the size of Finland or Spain. They include full control of the Sea of Azov, which has now become Russia’s de facto “internal lake”; control of several major seaports in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov and Europe’s largest nuclear-powered station in the Zaporizhie region.

As the war progresses, initial hopes and expectations that with the West’s support Ukraine can completely fight off the Russian invaders are slowly fading away. Criminal investigations were launched against several prominent opposition figures, while Aleksei Navalny’s sentence was extended. Ukraine today is now far more strategically aligned with the United States and NATO than before the invasion.
