Novak Djokovic’s visa cancellation might be popular but will damage Australia’s reputation for years to come.

AdvertisementBut the damage to Australia’s international image from the absurdly drawn-out process has been just as profound and will not be quickly forgotten. The Djokovic saga has made both the Morrison government and Tennis Australia look incompetent and indecisive, more concerned with managing public perceptions than fairly applying the rules.

Given we are mired in a deadly pandemic, it is hardly unreasonable or extreme for Australia to insist that only fully vaccinated foreigners are allowed into the country. For example, since November all foreign travellers arriving in the US by plane have been required to present proof of vaccination.

joshzepps IMO most Australians dont DAF what their reputation is like.. I mean why would they... some of the best standards of living in the world, one of the richest countries PC and some of the strictest borders... why would you want to let anyone else in? joshzepps Thats what you get when you pretend to be a part of the west and act more like the east

I think k it's simply , he broke the rules ! Lies were told he was in Spain simple . No big deal, he may be a big deal but he broke our border rules.Forget the Vax he was in Spain before he arrived in Oz .He is a adult he should have checked his paperwork. Who cares … it will be a 5 minute wonder until the next issue some over inflated sports star cannot follow the rules of the country he’s trying to break!

No it will not 🤪😜🤪 joshzepps Australia’s reputation has already been damaged. This simply puts it over the top. If the ATP and WTA had any integrity, they’d pack up and leave, and not return. Who cares, he should not have been allowed here in the first place Are you the Fox News of Australia? When you lie on your visa form, you should be denied entry , plain and simple!

As an unvaccinated player, if allowed to compete, Novak could easily contract the Omicron strain, test positive, and most likely forced to isolate and be ruled out of the Australian Open in any case. I see parallels with Peter Norman who was a hero the 1968 Olympics. He never played again because he stood up for what he believed in. Have we learned anything? Where is the risk in the context of the daily viral rate? Again it’s political. FreeNovak AustralianOpen2022

Novak Djokovic the ‘least important’ issue in Park HotelNw tht ND admit 2 falsehood & he did NOT keep 2 d conditions for his med exemption, tht means d exmption itself has 2 b revoked. Bcz he was in another covid country prior 2 arriving in Aust. Ths wrong fact was not disclosed in court. So he either perjured or exmption isn't valid.

joshzepps Good luck to Aussies travelling to Europe😂 Rename the tennis competition to the Hill Song festival. Laws do not apply there joshzepps Absolutely! you cant be serious. this is a pandemic. no ones reputation will be tarnished except for those who dont follow the medical advice. What a lot of rubbish,Novak’s visa application is a joke,he is a lying to everyone

No it won’t. HillsongParty ScomoParty AustraliaGlobalVillageIdiots 1984WasAWarning AustralianGovtIncompetent AustraliaTheGlobalVillageIdiot AustraliaClosed GlobalEmbarrassment Who cares what the rest off the world thinks I read a lot of international threads. Most see Australia as sticking up for themselves and not being swayed by money and power.

Novak Djokovic live news updates: Australia cancels tennis player’s visa againAustralia’s immigration minister, Alex Hawke, has re-cancelled the visa of reigning Australian Open tennis champion Bye Bye Djokovic. Well done AlexHawkeMP ... auspol Covid19 AusOpen AO2022 COVIDIOTS australia AustralianOpen australia So given that he is now an illegal entrant, is it Christmas Island or Manus? Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy :)

Lied on declaration form. Most likely lied that he had Covid. Great decision! Put a message to the world. No Vax No Entry into Oz! joshzepps Honestly, joshzepps Australia is lucky this hasn't trended: 'The Czech doubles player Renata Voracova, who was deported from Australia after her visa was cancelled, ... “felt like a criminal” and was made to undress by the Australia Border Force during questioning'

No it won’t!!! It will make people think twice before lying on their entry declaration. Strong decision It will enhance Australia's reputation. Most of Europe would love to have the sort of border controls we have and the US is green with envy. Most of the comments I am seeing on the BBC and ITV and getting from UK family and friends are supportive and asking why it took so long.

Don't think it will damage Australia's reputation but Tennis Australia have to get a grip and abide by the govt rulings before making their own assumptions. not popular with me, Australia is a petty country. The truth of the matter is he is antivaxs and he doesn't recognise Australian laws for antivaxs . The whole world is infected with the virus . Antivaxs are Australia's biggest problem .

Journalists are full of their own self importance the rest of the world doesn’t care Because is very rich powerful with powerful sponsors and must be allowed to be outlaw get the rich richest before giving a room to the disadvantaged?

Novak Djokovic waits to learn fate after making shock COVID admission.DjokerNole could learn whether he will be deported from Australia on Thursday as the federal government continues to weigh up its options. 7NEWS DjokerNole Whether or not he is deported, the Republic of Serbia will take this matter into their own hands too DjokerNole learn? DjokerNole you should learn english

Yep Popular with the hoards of social media whingers Well at least we can say that Australia now excels at Incompetence. Atrocious failure of management at every level. It's popular amongst some hypochondriac Australians, that's it. Clown country, sorry. 🤡 Just deport him already joshzepps Dreadful Australian Closed. Authoritarian Open.

Bull ArjanMuyen Wellicht kan zijn eigen land een toernooi organiseren? En dan de Aussies niet binnen laten komen! Lolz there goes the Anti Vaxxers talking

Novak Djokovic faces fine or prison for breaking isolation while Covid positiveStar is due to play at Australian Open but faces possibility of deportation Excellent outcome. What do you think Djokovic should get? The human errors of greed and hubris.

We're in a Pandemic.. it's out of control still. 5.5million have died in the world. Covid19 just wants a set of Lungs to Live in temporarily until it's next victim is sought once it's propelled itself to it's next victim...and the cycle goes on. Vaccinate today, and save a life It’s popular because he got what was coming to him. It began and ended with Djoker. The govt’s handling of it should attract criticism but Australians happy with the outcome aren’t to blame for any reputation damage.

Australia doesn't apologise to apply Border Control rules.. Countries have tough regulations around the world on border entry. We are highly vaccinated for travellers to be here, even if we suffered mild symptoms initially at home. Easier to have been ' Vaccinated'. If just 1/1000th of the attention currently warranted to the selfish pricks we're currently discussing was channeled towards the refugees imprisoned in this crazy country.... we'd at least be making some forward steps.....

You know why his Visa was Counseled His not Devil worshipper Australian joshzepps Well the AO winner is going to have a massive asterisk next to their name. Sucks for them too It shouldn't. He did the wrong thing This visa saga is not whats destroying Australia’s reputation, the current government has excelled in doing that all by itself.

I don’t care either way how Australia wants to handle Novak from a stance perspective, but this back and forth publicity is absolutely embarrassing. I just cannot believe! The only affect that the decisions made by Fed Gov is to hurt people, Australians and foreigners.

Journalists hit back after Novak Djokovic admits to rogue Covid breachThe French journalist who interviewed Novak Djokovic without knowing that the men’s top tennis player had tested positive for Covid-19 said he was told not to ask him about his vaccination status for the virus. Testing positive for Covid is pretty meaningless. The Australian circusOpen

joshzepps Meh. With news cycles today this will be forgotten quickly, like everything else. Seems Novak is unpopular in some Australian social media but does that make it ok to treat him unfairly ? Hope he has another court win and more ? Pffft Shame on Australia. joshzepps I Never watch tennis… might start watching the Australian open … just to support them! We have enough of selfish rich sport players who don’t care about nothing else then themselves! DjokovicOut

Au contraire, I can't wait to go visit now! Popular? Rubbish !! If anything is damaging to Australia's reputation it's our incompetent leader, and that happened way before Novax entered the country illegally. What will Nadal? When Minister deport him? Nadal was positive on Dec.20th and entered in Australia on Dec31. From Dec.20th 10 days,Australian law requires minimum of 14d and he certain infected the citizens of Australia So Nadal broke the law of Australia and must be deported.!!

Novak Djokovic faces fine or prison for breaking isolation while Covid positiveStar is due to play at Australian Open but faces possibility of deportation Sure. When pigs fly. I worry that because he is unpopular, he may end up broken. He wont face anything

joshzepps Oh well. Australia used to be a nice country. And why did the minister intervene to kick him out? It has nothing to do with the virus. The Minister was given the task, that it must,in any way, to prevent Djokovic from winning the 10th time because then Australia must place a bust of Djokovic in front of the arena..

And why did the minister intervene to kick him out? It has nothing to do with the virus. The Minister was given the task, that it must,in any way, to prevent Djokovic from winning the 10th time because then Australia must place a bust of Djokovic in front of the arena. Speaking as a regular tourist from the UK it shows to me that finally they apply the rules to everyone, if he had of been allowed to stay and play it would have stunk

B.S.! Go home Novak you are not wanted / congrats to Fed Govt on making this decision whilst no one has heard from the State Govt - Dan had amnesia again What sort of special exemption would a super fit person possibly have, the I don't want to be told what to do exemption. I don't think so - it's clear ND has lied at every turn - everywhere he goes. Did he have covid ? Probably not. If he did he knowingly mixed with the public whilst positive.

Why will Australia’s reputation be damaged? He’s a tennis player and there’ll be more as good as him if not better into the future. His 💰and lawyers will probably see him play anyway. Tennis rules are the only rules novac will follow. Other rules he couldn’t care less. Rubbish! It will only upset grifters and scammers who try to game border control.

here come the crystal ball readers 😂 Yes it was a very short sighted decision by the Minister, especially overriding a Court’s ruling. Damage has well and truly been done guys. Australia has absolutely, positively torched itself over the last 2yrs. If he is not getting kicked out from the country, then they send a wrong message: 'Do anything you like, I have money and good lawyer so I can do whatever I want! Rules for other people only to follow, not me!'

The current male number 1 seed lied. Stop making him more important than other players who complied with the rules. AO2022 The Age, how will this damage us? An entitled liar who will cheat off the court hasn't no place in the Australian Open. If it damages any reputation it will be that of the Liberal Party. And their name is mud. Here and internationally. Just another debacle to add to their list.

What's the point of having a court system if one man can wield all the power? Embarrassing. This is a really bad look for Australia. Bad move by the Minister

joshzepps ...you mean in the same way fines just make EVERYONE exceed the speed limit? joshzepps would it be to sceptical of me to say greed from many media /broadcasters of the event owned by pals had an influence to get him here if Djokovic rightly or wrongly stood on his own principles and not attended an event that required he be vaxed this wouldn't have happened

human rights activists and lawyers paying close attention to this. The Morrison government think they won but they won't. But locking people up for 9 years for wanting to seek asylum wont🤔get in the fcking bin... Sorry not passing the pub test It was not in my plans to visit Australia but today I will reschedule my summer schedule

No issue with the cancellation. Onus on applicant to provide supporting evidence for Visa if requested. Frustrated with it being politicised. They knew he might pull a swifty on paperwork and took zero initiative before he arrived to prevent this international embarrassment. No it won’t | BETTER ANALYSIS

Bold of you to think Australia gives a crap 😂 BS

Why the fck do we think this will damage our reputation but not incarcerating asylum seekers for over a decade? freetherefugees With anti-vaxers maybe, but they can't go to Australia... Game.Set.Match Morrison. Albo,Shorty and the other never have beens are done. What, so tennis players wont come to the aus open anymore? 💩 Prediction:it wont and it will all be forgotten in just a few months.

Na she’ll be right mate Channel 9, owner of the Age, will telecast the tennis this year. With Djokovic out ratings will be lower. This is the 7908th article the Age has published supporting Djokovic this week. Don't care. Get vaccinated or don't come here I haven't rated Australia since Tampa. Millions of us won’t watch. No reason to watch. Whomever wins will not have been fully tested. A great way to cripple the gravitas of AustralianOpen This was a really stupid move.

You can bet your ass Australia will be last on my list after this disgusting debacle. Australia does not deserve the world's best tennis player. Enjoy your little tournament with your mid level pros. Scomo loses friends everywhere he goes on behalf of Australia, but you think this is the deciding factor?

It's been a very messy affair but I rather think it's Djokovic's reputation that's been damaged. Australia doesn't care how good or how rich you are if you're a cheat & disrespect our processes. To who? Anti-vaxxers and RWNJs? Exactly !

Hopefully we'll have a new government soon!

to save articles for later. Normal text size Very large text size Advertisement Immigration Minister Alex Hawke’s decision to revoke Novak Djokovic’s visa just days before the Australian Open will undoubtedly prove popular with the Australian public. Never particularly well-liked, the world No.1 has tarnished his reputation by refusing to get vaccinated and breaching Serbia’s isolation rules after testing positive for COVID-19 in December. But the damage to Australia’s international image from the absurdly drawn-out process has been just as profound and will not be quickly forgotten. Whether it be on “stopping the boats” or preventing COVID-19 from spreading out of control until the arrival of the Omicron variant, Australia’s tough approach to border security has often been remarkably harsh but undeniably effective at achieving its goals. And Tennis Australia has succeeded in turning the Australian Open, once the ugly duckling of the four grand slams, into a hugely successful event that more than holds its own with Wimbledon and the French and US opens. The Djokovic saga has made both the Morrison government and Tennis Australia look incompetent and indecisive, more concerned with managing public perceptions than fairly applying the rules. So much for the land of the “fair go”. While controversial issues are usually more complicated than they appear on the surface, the Djokovic issue boils down to one pretty simple question. Are unvaccinated foreigners allowed into the country if they have recently had COVID-19? Given we are mired in a deadly pandemic, it is hardly unreasonable or extreme for Australia to insist that only fully vaccinated foreigners are allowed into the country. For example, since November all foreign travellers arriving in the US by plane have been required to present proof of vaccination. Advertisement Exemptions for people who had recently been diagnosed with COVID-19 would be understandable too given they have some degree of natural immunity. The key point is that the rules should be easily understood and applied fairly to everyone. That did not occur. It should have been clear to Djokovic - and all the other Australian Open players - whether they would be allowed in to the country before they boarded a plane to Australia. Certainly, the issue should have been resolved before the Open draw was conducted with Djokovic seeded number one. The cancellation of Novak Djokovic’s visa has shed light on the vagaries of Australia’s visa cancellation regime. Credit: AP Prime Minister Scott Morrison insisted that no-one - including Djokovic - was “above the rules” but the rules turned out to be maddeningly opaque. The fact it took Hawke four full days after a federal judge revoked the first cancellation of Djokovic’s visa to make his ministerial decision only reinforces that what should have been a clear-cut decision became unnecessarily complex and politicised. Loading Most Australians don’t want Djokovic to be allowed to play in Melbourne. But the way the story has played out has been a global embarrassment for Australia, and an unforced error of colossal proportions. Save
