Despite being deported with a three-year ban from returning Novak Djokovic insists he holds no grudges against Australia and hopes the new government will allow him to return so he can play in the Australian Open.

The world number one was sensationally deported before last year’s Grand Slam tournament over his vaccination status but Djokovic insisted he holds no grudges against Australia.

“But I don’t know anything about whether my visa is going to be reinstated or whether I’m going to be allowed to come back to Australia.Djokovic was held at the Park Hotel detention facility in Melbourne while his case was heard in the courts but said there were no ill feelings towards Australia.“Look, you know, it was what it was. If I have an opportunity to go back to Australia and play a place where I made the biggest success in my career in grand slams, I would love to come back.

Before the election newly appointed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese refused to entertain suggestions a government under his leadership would give Djokovic an exemption from his three-year ban. Djokovic is currently sitting on 20 Grand Slam titles - one less than record holder Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

Incredible that Morrison deported him, thinking it would win him votes, just like he thought net zero would win him votes, or release the Sri Lankan family from Xmas island.

What if we do not want you to play in our country.

Thank God ScoMo kept us safe over the last two years. Imagine the disaster that would have unfolded under Labor

Yep - just make sure ScoMo and that Victorian premier are banned from attending

Farrk of Joker. Why should we bend the rules for you? Just because you have money and can hit a ball? The penalty is the penalty.

CroweDM I feel like we have been released from a dictatorship and humanity has returned. Maybe soon the international community may start asking us back to play. CroweDM This is brilliant. Every member of the previous government should be ashamed of themselves for the way they treated this family for shallow political gain. Shame on all of them. CroweDM Labor prolonging the agony of the family by having them on uncertain bridging visas rather than giving them the certainty of permanent residency.
