More than 80 public schools will sit empty for much of Tuesday as a planned strike action by hundreds of teachers stretches resources thin across Western Australia.

Dozens of public schools are expected to sit empty for much of Tuesday as a planned strike action by hundreds of teachers stretches resources thin across Western Australia.

In a letter to parents, the union said it was holding the strike because it wanted the Department to "treat seriously"."This is the first stop work action teachers have taken in over a decade…that's how serious the situation has become for our members," it reads. The current offer includes an 11 per cent pay rise over three years, but the union was pushing for a 12 per cent pay rise over two years.Speaking on the weekend, Education Minister Tony Buti said there was still time to reach an agreement, although he would not be drawn on the possibility of a third offer."We are open and ready to continue negotiations.

"We want the union to put that offer to members of their union before they resort to industrial action."Department of Education director general Lisa Rodgers said the planned action was "really disappointing"."Schools will look quite different, so we won't have the standard teaching and learning program in the mornings… but some schools may be open and there may be little disruption," she told ABC Local Radio.
