Parched, scorched earth and thirsty livestock is a common story across regional New South Wales with waterways crippled by a combination of record low rainfall and unusually high temperatures.

Crucial rivers and dams supplying major regional centres are expected to dry-up completely within a few weeks unless there is significant rainfall, according to reports. The news is a “big wake-up call” according to NSW Water Minister Melinda Pavey, who is urging residents across the state to “conserve every drop of water” in these serious drought conditions.

“Things are dire and it’s important that our city communities and inland regional communities understand how tough this is,” she told Sky News. “In 2016 NSW was virtually awash with water. We've gone from a year of plenty to three years of virtually nothing.” The figures from Water NSW suggest Dubbo is most at risk with major waterways due to dry up by November.
