But the national regulator, Racing Australia, introduced a traceability rule three years ago to track the whereabouts of horses from birth to retirement. This afternoon Racing NSW told 7.30 it will commit to investigating all of the reported horses, but raised questions about jurisdictions.In one instance a horse called War Ends was still listed as being active and racing 18 months after it had been slaughtered at Meramist Abattoir.
Racing NSW, along with Racing ACT, also introduced a new and enforceable rule that, in the event that owners were unable to find a home for a horse that was being retired,It also stipulated that a horse could not be sold or gifted at a livestock auction not approved by the regulator.

As humans, do we care about animal suffering? Why do we sometimes and no other times? Why is this slaughter unacceptable but live export, cows, pigs, sheep kept and killed in inhumane conditions 'part of life'? Why are humans so self contradictory?

Thank you for having the guts to show this. Australia needed to see this and see why activists are fighting Ag gag laws. A horse is a cow is a pig is a chicken. Exploiting a horse is no different to what happens in the farming Industry. Everyone insists they love their animal.
This is horrible, horse and greyhound racing should both be banned. Also the bolt gun method of stunning/killing animals for slaughter should be illegal. If an animal is to be stunned or killed there must be a better way than using this crude tool.
Animals are sentient beings! Laws to minimise cruelty and harm to them should be nationalised. Instead, we're getting laws with very heavy penalties, designed to stop activists exposing animal cruelty. People who are inhumane to animals also lack sensitivity to fellow humans!

What did people think happened to the 1000's of horses that race each week? Did people think there were big farms full of old horses given they race until around 8 years and live into their mid 20's. Dumb city folk they been killed for years, let the vegans to protect them.

What a joke this country is and the animal cruelty and suffering is horrendous - and our Governments turn a blind eye as usual. Horseracing is a dirty game full of shonky operators and corruption. Live Animal Trade is a disgrace and then there’s the greyhounds...
No one is monitoring the rules. The racing industry is rich enough to provide facilities specifically for humane euthanasia of their horses. And provide a retraining facility. Changes can also be made to ensure less horses are bred for the industry.
Again the ABC do what the 'regulators' are supposed to - self regulation is and always will be a joke. caromeldrum deserves an award for this.

Evil greed and the brainwashed view of horses as dumb livestock created this-and of course overbreeding in the constant hope for a winner. I’d rather see a horse humanely euthanized & buried than going thru the path to slaughter and turned into meat.
Thanks for caring, ABC. Even the RSPCA lies about the number of animals it kills. When I worked at its Nowra Branch it was reporting euthanized dogs as 'rehomed' on its Facebook.
