Deputy Premier Barilaro: 'NRL the tonic we need to get through virus' | SMHsport

The NSW government has told ARL Commission chairman Peter V'landys that it will work with him to get the competition going as soon as possible.

,sweeping public health orders signed by NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard on March 30 gave the NRL an avenue to keep playing because the new restrictions did not “prevent the conduct of events (such as sporting or racing events)”.The NRL had already grounded its competition by then, having decided on March 23 to indefinitely stop playing on the advice of its pandemic expert who feared a “player could die” because of the spike in people in NSW testing positive to COVID-19.

“What we’re seeing in racing is a sport continue because of the protocols and measures in place,” Mr Barilaro said. “It’s allowed that sport to continue. Applying the same sort of approach to the NRL, that’s why I have confidence in Peter V’landys that he can do this.”

The NRL, however, is already facing a backlash from some quarters as it seeks exemptions to start playing again.Loading“It’s more than footy,” Mr Barilaro said. “It’s an economic uplift for a range of industries but it’s more important to the mental well-being and health of society. The NRL is so important to the psyche of Australians at a time when we are all doing it tough in self-isolation. We love the game, it’s tribal, it brings the best out of Australians.

SMHsport Oh please....get back under your rock SMHsport Maybe, but not at a start date that only appeals to the ego’s of a few (V’landys etc) SMHsport The tonic we actually need is to do exactly what we are doing...social isolation. Who cares about a bunch of entitled bulked up, overpaid playboys. Cuddles, high fives and arse slapping is not ok Mr Deputy Premier.

SMHsport tonic. ie distraction for the wife beaters among the supporters. SMHsport It’s placating of the masses. It’s a distraction from the rampant corruption within politics. They’re worried that if people start paying attention to what the government is up to they’ll be held to account for their bumbling and stealing.

SMHsport I'd prefer a vaccine but will settle for a bit of sport for a while SMHsport You know if we never had an overpriced NRL gravytrain again, people would play their own friggen games of football don’t you . Why give them money ? SMHsport Yeah nah SMHsport Yes Wahun is desperate for the NRL to restart

SMHsport That’s a tonic I can do without thanks. 🤢 SMHsport Whatever gets you off JohnBarilaroMP Personally I think the whole thing is a disgrace. Watched by numbskulls, played by dead shits. SMHsport Bye bye NRL SMHsport Playing games with peoples lives is not the answer... idiots SMHsport Fool SMHsport I’m sorry, but NRL is what Why is NRL a “tonic” that is going to help anyone deal with the coronavirus?People are dying, others have lost jobs, kids aren’t going to school, grandparents are isolated from their grandkids - how is NRL something we “need” at all right now. 😤

SMHsport FFS!!! SMHsport Fuck. Right. Off. SMHsport He misspelt ‘vaccine’ SMHsport No it’s not SMHsport Government step in and stop this or lift all stay at home laws ..if it's good for us it's good for them ..Stop this foolish attempt at NRL or lift all band's ..no.other sport is.playing SMHsport Peter Costello / Nine brought about this 'felxible'/insecure workforce. Let Channel 9's go to princesses suck it up like the rest of the 'flexible' workforce. Tax payers are now paying for Costello's flexible workforce.

SMHsport What stupidity this Virus will be at it's peek in Winter what stupid brain less person made this decision..Just greed and let's face it NRL has no Money ...Nine wake up SMHsport Really? I would have thought it more of a laxative than a tonic. The idea gives me the sh*ts anyway SMHsport “AUSSIES LOVE SPOOOOOORT” apparently

SMHsport There’s dickheads and there’s dickheads, and this guy is both of them SMHsport No. I'd far rather I could go out to concerts, the theatre, or to restaurants. Please stop the inane, wholly false assertion that ALL Australians care a damn abt football. Some of us have good reason to loathe its malignant social influence on the males in our lives. So there.

SMHsport Do you not recall RubyPrincess? SMHsport I'ld rather watch re-reuns of Seinfeld. SMHsport Lols Barilaro spruiking NRL for betting agencies is probably why he is supporting it SMHsport The government needs its Colosseum to distract the masses. SMHsport Bullshit!!! SMHsport Watch re-runs. SMHsport I’m sure all of those ‘die hard’ Victorian, South Australian and Western Australian fans agree...

SMHsport A vaccine is the real tonic we need to get through this virus, JohnBarilaroMP SMHsport We're being asked to sit on our couch, not go in the trenches. 'Get through'... Pfffft. Melodramatic knob. SMHsport Really though? How many people watched, how many people went to the games? Its a dying code sadly. This is a desperate attempt by NRL to take advantage of being the only sport running in the world, they have no cash, and should only blame themselves.

SMHsport The stupidity runs deep in this government. SMHsport What planet is he on ? Who does he represent ? SMHsport Rugby league’s long-time broadcast partner Channel Nine has launched a stunning takedown of the NRL, seething about being left out of the planning for the restart of the competition and accusing the governing body of years of mismanagement and wastefulness.

SMHsport Yeah nah. SMHsport My family is a tonic ... the NRL is drama laden crap SMHsport Why do people like him think that because he is addicted to this fool of a game, everyone else must be too? SMHsport It’s funny how my life had not changed at all since the NRL finished, keep it up SMHsport Nine is all about the money. When are average folk going to work out that channel 9 only cares about their big business buddies.

SMHsport NRL just the tonic to get Foxtel through the virus crisis... no matter the cost to the community. SMHsport Who give 2 squirts what this moron says ? SMHsport I am doomed! SMHsport I thought Rowan Dean was the dumbest person in Australia? SMHsport Umm does Barilaro (and the NRL) realised not every single Australian cares about NRL? I suspect there's quite a few of us who don't give a rat's arse.

SMHsport What a joke!! SMHsport Deputy premier? More like Deputy Dawg. What a clown. SMHsport You are pulling all our plonkers! The players are mostly borderline criminals! Get a grip! SMHsport Hilariously this guy is the deputy leader of a political party SMHsport Get a life- it certainly is not for all of us

'Fighter' Johnson stable but remains in intensive care, deputy confirmsBritish Prime Minister Boris Johnson remains in intensive care but his designated deputy Dominic Raab says he expects the PM to be back at the helm of the Government shortly. Rather silly The virus doesn't care if you fight it or not It's a 50/50 call after ICU It's not like half the people just don't bother fighting So why is he taking up an ICU bed if hes on standard oxygen therapy after this length of time. He will be in HDU not ICU & could go back to a ward area if O2 demands not increasing
