The NSW Coroner has asked the Director of Public Prosecutions to examine the death of an Indigenous man shot by a corrective services officer outside a hospital last year.
Dwayne Johnstone was wearing handcuffs and ankle shackles when he attempted to escape after being escorted from Lismore Base Hospital following treatment on March 15.In Lismore today, NSW coroner Teresa O'Sullivan suspended her inquiry and referred the death to the DPP to decide whether to proceed with charges."A five-volume brief of evidence was tendered on the first day of inquest and I have reviewed that material very carefully this week," she told the court.

Nobody should be shot in the back full stop. You cannot under any circumstances say your life was in danger when they are running away. Where does it say you can shoot to stop someone from escaping? And if it does it should be amended.A firearm should NOT be used for that purpose
