With Valentine's Day on the horizon, plenty of singles are looking for a date but they should be wary of potential scammers. 9News

They can be charming, affectionate and seemingly "honest", but as soon as a victim starts to trust them, these scammers turn to the one thing they really want: money.

"Romance scams are particularly devastating because not only are there financial losses, but there is also an emotional toll for the victim, which can have lasting psychological impacts on people," Ms Rickard said.People aged 45 to 64 are the most likely group to be scammed, having lost over $18 million last year, but that doesn't mean younger people aren't being targeted.

Obvious signs of a fake profile, such as photos of celebrities or models, and limited friends or connections, can be easy to spot, but others may take a bit of snooping. Also keep an eye out for people who seem too good to be true or want to rush the relationship forward quickly, as this can be a sign of a scam.And make sure to keep quiet about your own finances when connecting with people online, as this can make you a target for scams.
