Year 12 art student Izzy Craven knows how it feels to be an outsider in Australia. The popularity of her striking self-portrait shows she isn't alone.

Izzy Craven won the people's choice award at this year's Exit Art exhibition in DarwinVisitors can view the pieces at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory"She was just very excited when she saw it, because she still actually has the scarf that I painted," she said.Navigating cultural identity was a central theme in Izzy's self-portrait, which earned her the people's choice award at a prestigious art exhibition for Year 12 students in Darwin.

"I think the concept this year was about my identity and my culture. And then thinking about my culture, I'm just so disconnected from it," she said. This balancing act between honouring family history and participating in mainstream Australian culture struck a chord among young artists and audiences in the Top End, according to exhibition coordinator Kellie Joswig.

My wife came from overseas to live Australian culture, if she wanted to live her traditional culture she would have stayed in her country. Like when I go there I do not expect them to do things the way I am used to it.

1/4 Australians now were born overseas. 1/2 have at least 1 parent born overseas. We have cultures from everywhere coming in, cannot possibly accommodate changing our culture to fit them all.

Talented artist but she is Korean/Filipino living in Australia we all starting to feel like outsiders here. We are trying to embrace too many cultures and neglecting traditional Australian Culture. PLEASE just have 1 culture so everyone can fit in.
