The number of people abandoning emergency medical care before being seen has doubled in Victoria in the past year, as doctors warn there could be serious consequences.

Key points:

There is barely a spare seat inside as dozens of sick people anxiously wait for hours in uncomfortable chairs to get the urgent medical care they need and, if they are lucky, a bed. More than 800 people a day are leaving overcrowded emergency departments across the state, according to three doctors who said the hospital system is past breaking point.

"Category three patients are meant to be seen in 30 minutes: we know their wait time is blowing out and they are that group of people they might go home, their clinical condition could get worse, and that is concerning."

Obviously not Dictator Dan, he would have skipped the giant queue.

They are usually filled with non emergencies, people that won't/can't pay the GP fee. Charge a $30 'admin' fee, you'd be able to play bowls in the waiting room.

ABC News not ABC Melbourne I'm pretty sure hospitals around Australia are facing the same battles But no zone in on melb

Imagine if (when) we bought back the ability to bulk bill when visiting a doctor what amazing benefit this will have on our hospitals - how many are going to Emergency who would have gone to the doctor if they could! Caused by the incompetent previous Federal govt!

Due to business trips, I have been rejected many times because many doctors do not accept new patients, and some doctors who are willing to accept new patients have to pay out of pocket for extremely high cost, especially in Western Australia.

Love all the Dan sycophants coming out with 'it's a problem everywhere' and 'this isn't journalism, it's about the state election'. Morons. As Victorians we deserve better than this, and the ABC are right to report it.

Nurses and doctors are sitting at home waiting for the jab mandates to be lifted in Vic.

1/2 It's called the Emergency Department. Not the urgent department. Not a drop in clinic. For emergencies like blocked airways, breathing difficulties, chest pain, uncontrolled bleeding, strokes, serious bone fractures, drownings, unconscious people and so on...

Find out how long prisoners in Qld take to be seen for a staff infection, or any infection or condition. Mental health medication reviews take up to and over 3 months, psychiatrist referral takes over 3 months to get and psychological treatment is an activity pack find a words.

Also Gosford Hospital NSW

This is not just in Victoria it’s Australia wide! Even before Covid this was happening, the system has always been in stress but wasn’t it good that the media lived in fairy land and didn’t see what people were struggling with. But how good is an economy when this happens?

Is this really just Victoria? If you can wait in ED for hours and then leave, was it really an emergency? Every non emergency sitting in ambulances or ED is causing delays for real emergencies. This should be a public education piece as much as a gov policy piece.

The Problem is that with cost of living impacting people They Cannot afford to see a GP . If they are lucky enough to get appointment. Bulk billing is get to be rare. Low income cannot afford the fees. The ED is only alternative . It is as bad in regions

Happening in every. In part looking confusing because the media have gone operation silent on covid

Why is there no discussion about the pressures of COVID? Not just the extra demand for services, but also the impact on the workforce who are sick. We've forgotten that the restrictions were about taking pressure off the health system. Lift restrictions, this is the consequence

Only a cursory mention of the effect of covid on EDs and hospitals. Surely this is a major factor in why waiting times are blowing out. Without strong covid transmission control measures in the community, hospitals will continue to be stretched.

I waited 7 hours last month. It's absolute chaos in emergency and our health workers need far more support with more staff, better conditions and a higher pay, especially nurses. Nurses are the lifeblood of our health system. The bedlam negatively affects our community.

Yes why do a story on Victoria alone it’s right across the country ffs .

Why is this bring framed as a Victoria issue?

Not just Victoria, Australia wide.

I just had I surgery. I had to go back into hospital the next day just so they could put eye drops in. Stupid shit like this shouldn't happen. Plenty of people in there that could of just went to their gp. Absolutely ridiculous

Need to fix general practice Cannot get in and still COVID restrictions re coughs and colds That is the problem

Then Dan is stupid for waiting ten hours. I would have gone home after 90 mins mjrowland68

One of the issues here is surely “after visiting his GP”? He went to his GP, appears not to have received an adequate level of care, and then finished up in A&E, where he ought not have needed to be. There are systemic issues - with over-stretched A&Es left to pick up the pieces.
