A cyber attack has brought down the critical internet address books that help run Telstra's network, resulting in thousands of people across Australia reporting outages on Sunday morning.

"We've identified the issue and are working on it," thetelco later said. "Some of our Domain Name Servers (DNS) used to route your traffic online are experiencing a cyber attack, known as a Denial of Service (DoS). Your info isn't at risk. We're doing all we can to get you back online."

Several thousand Telstra customers are reporting internet outages.Credit:A Telstra spokesperson told theHeraldandThe Agethe company was blocking the "malicious traffic" trying to attack its services and, as a result, that was having an impact on its NBN services.

Telstra customers in other parts of the country have also reported outages.Twitter users reported the issue was with Telstra's domain name system (DNS) - the internet's address book, which translates domain names (like google.com) to IP (Internet Protocol) addresses.
