Coronavirus update: UK death toll passes 50,000 as Sweden admits mistakes were made

New data from Scotland brought the UK's coronavirus death toll to 50,059, a dire milestone as Prime Minister Boris Johnson as he tries to ease the stringent lockdown there.

Reuters also recorded the 50,000 figure, comprised of a tally of fatalities where COVID-19 was mentioned on death certificates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland up to May 22, and up to May 31 in Scotland. "In the last two months, we have seen the number of deaths of nurses as a result of coronavirus around the world rise from 100 to now in excess of 600 and we think worldwide the number of healthcare workers who could be infected by the virus is around 450,000," said Howard Catton, chief executive officer of the Geneva-based ICN,Coronavirus has claimed hundreds of nurses' lives around the world, but the full figure is not known.

Spain and Germany have recorded low numbers of fatalities among healthcare workers despite large outbreaks and high death tolls.Sweden's chief epidemiologist Andres Tegnall, who was behind a national strategy that avoided the strict lockdowns observed in many other countries said Sweden could have handled the pandemic differently.

Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, who has promised an inquiry also admitted too many elderly citizens in the Scandinavian nation had died.
