Infectious disease researcher at Griffith University Nigel McMillan says “in the eight weeks that we’ve known about this virus, we can see now a thousand deaths and more than 42,000 cases”.

Mr McMillan told Sky News “there is some hint that the rate of infection in China is starting to slow down, but I think the next two weeks is really going to tell us where we are going to go with this pandemic”.

“There are a number of efforts going on to develop this, and this has to be produced - so the production of the vaccine is not trivial - and then tested,” he said. “We have to choose a candidate vaccine and these can be based on proteins. “We have to test them on animals to see that it works and that it actually protects, and then we have to test it on humans to see that it is actually safe.
