Coronavirus antibodies declined rapidly in the British population during summer, according to a study led by Imperial College London, suggesting people may have a waning immunity because antibody protection after a COVID-19 infection may not last long.

There was no change in the levels of antibodies seen in healthcare workers, possibly due to repeated exposure to the virus.

"If antibodies stay high over a long period of time that is reassuring, it is not guaranteed [that you are immune to the virus] but it’s reassuring," Dr Senanayake said. "There are lots of different antibodies which you’re not detecting are present in your body which even at low levels may be able to interact with the virus in a synergistic way against infection," he said.

"Just because an antibody level is declining doesn’t automatically correlate with a lack of immunity, however you’d be happier if the levels didn’t decline," he said.
