A police officer has spoken about the moment when, after stopping to assist at a fatal hit and run collision, she discovered the victim was her own father.

David Thomson, 60, was killed last Thursday morning when he was struck head-on by a yet to be identified driver in Delacombe, about an hour from Melbourne.

“It was just like any other day,” Senior Constable Sophie Thomson said of Thursday, when on her usual route to work at Ballarat Police Station, she stopped to offer help to her colleagues at a crime scene on La Trobe Street. “He was an absolute gentleman with a heart of gold and will be dearly missed by everyone he met,” he wrote.

How absolutely heart breaking💔. I hope they catch the person driving the car and find out what happened. No one knows how they are going to react in an accident situation, adrenalin kicks in people do worrisome things when it happens... Such tragedy 😢
