A private Christian school in Brisbane has been found to have discriminated against a five-year-old Cook Islands boy for threatening to expel him for having long hair, grown for cultural reasons.

The Australian Christian College Moreton was ordered to apologise to Cyrus Taniela, after it told his family the boy's hair must be cut by the start of semester two on Monday, or he'd have to leave.

His mother, Wendy, took the matter to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, saying Cyrus's hair was being grown for a traditional hair-cutting ceremony. The school denied it was discriminating against Cyrus and said it would treat any student disobeying school rules the same.QCAT member Samantha Traves ordered the school to end its bid to expel Cyrus and send a written apology to his family for its actions.READ MOREMs Traves also rejected the school's argument that allowing Cyrus to attend class with long hair could lead to"a loss of discipline" and"further pressure on the principles underlying the uniform policy".

However, Ms Traves rejected Cyrus's family's bid for compensation, saying there was no evidence he had suffered any emotional distress and the college had allowed him to attend school while the court battle played out.

I saw that story. Really not getting it. I come from Canada and public school. No uniforms... and we turned out ok...

elee_bella I didn't really see schools in this light until this article, I think it is so wrong that such schools allow to imposed their own agendas and views on students. That's why i think public schools are the best because they embrace all cultures.

He’s too young to learn this lesson-discrimination is a part and parcel of life

This dude definitely would have been expelled...

Christian school.......

Wrong. If he or his parents wants to stick to their culture repulsive habits they should live in the Cook Islands, a hellhole. Coming to Australia most of us respect the Australian culture and protocols as it should be. The long hair is a step down in the standards of the school

Nobody cares

Why are schools still trying to use hair to discriminate against brown kids?

Jesus had a crew cut.

Who was this bloke supposed to be? Just asking

Get a good lawyer and sue their ass chain responsability is not the principal it is every individual sitting on the board go get em

The next front in the war on religion is to defund private schools.. where do I enlist 🙋🏽

If you don't like the school just change. You know the rules before you are in. What's wrong these days? Discrimination is now a pure excuse for people who are selfish

Now do Islamic schools.

When was the last time SBS reported on an Islamic school imposing rules on students that are contrary to Australia’s anti-discrimination laws?

Did they know Jesus had long hair?

aggies_oasis Good. A school ought to be a place of learning. Teachers ought to know.

Because they’re Christian, that’s why.

Never quite figured out why schools fixate on hair. It's just hair! It's tied back, not in his face or interfering with anyone else. I don't get it.

You lost me at private!!!

This school gets $8500 per student from public funds while charging parents only $2000. This is a publicly funded private school. aussieEd

Disgusting but the muslims can have a rug on ther heads

Typical Christian values, pick on someone you’re size! Bloody hell

Is SBS attacking a school because it's Christian? or is it simply publishing more antiChristian propaganda on behalf of it's Sharia audience? The school acted foolishly of course ,forbidding long hair was some thing i went through at school...in 1968.

IngaStunzner Spare me, I've known plenty of Cook Islanders with short hair. If you choose the school, you've chosen the rules. Don't like it? Go elsewhere.

Great example of Christian values

Private schools take expensive school fees hence they shd pay taxes. A five year old hair cut is important but so does your contribution to the country’s tax revenue if everyone work hard pay taxes thru their nose, why private school & religious bodies are exempted?

Lynmaree56 Jesus just read this tweet, rolled his eyes, flicked his long hair back over his shoulders and left!

deniseshrivell Never understood any school’s obsession with kids’ hair.

Ahh there’s Christians for you. Nothing turns you to atheism than the Christian Right.

Wasn’t this from last year? Remember this on news.

deniseshrivell Leave the kid alone

deniseshrivell Wonder if they check their school policy against the Australian Constitution?

People need to learn to respect rules. You go to any institution, state or another country then you obey their rules. If you don't like their rules then don't go there. People have their right to live the lifestyle they wish, in the same way the boy has his.

I remember, cause I'm old lol) but I can remember when long hair was a criminal offence in Singapore, with a lengthy jail sentence, and the would cut it short as soon as they landed in jail, but still had to serve the sentance. In Aus the Beatles almost banned for their hair.

More concerning is why parents send their children to a school where its staff is required to believe: 'In the total depravity of the nature of man' & 'the absolute inability of man to save himself from eternal punishment by his own works.' Marilynrules1

What do the Christian school say about his bottom?

Why people remain in cults that discriminate against who they are is baffling.

aconvict He looks neat and tidy, which is thus within the school rules. 'School policy, requires boys' hair to be neat, tidy and not hanging over their faces.'

better not let Jesus in. He had long hair.

I smell BS

There's your good christian schooling folks. A little 5 yr old.... what a bunch of hypocrites. No doubt receiving taxpayer's money to perpetuate this horrible discrimination. He looks cleanand tidy. It's disgusting I think.😠

I remember when I was at Catholic school in the 70's and we were made to cut our hair we would always argue that Jesus had long hair. They never had a good comeback to that 😆

Not very Christian. What would Jesus do....? 🤔

CHRISTIAN?

‘Private Christian School’ There’s your problem right there..... Indoctrination of children by any religious outfit should be illegal. All places of worship should also be paying taxes.. No exemptions.

Remove religion from education. In the end religion discriminates.

Ummm this is in Australia? How embarrassing 🤦 Those parents would have paid their schools fees so it's none of the schools damn business how he wears his hair!

For a Christian school, they are not very Christian 💙💛

Excellent. Great to see common sense and justice prevail in such troubling times. Hopefully this will set precedence and send a message to self governing institutions that take money from both parents and tax payer then engage in discrimination and regulatory capture.

“Christian” ? 🤔 Yeah. Na.

Its a bloody haircut that's all , stop clogging the courts with these trivial matters . If you don't like private school rules which are made public BEFORE you enrol go to a public school.

Anti-Christian and UnAustralian! This is disgusting! This boy should find a new bloody school to go to if he doesn't want to follow the rules... This is absolutely Anti-White and an example of Non-White Privilege.

I feel his pain. Been discriminated against my entire life simply because of my preferred haircut. People say cut your hair then. But trans people can choose to be lgbtetc & all hell breaks loose if they're discriminated against.

Right, so..they have a rule about short hair. This kids family wouldn't follow it. So they have to make a special rule go one person. So, why is the SBS trying to provoke racial violence over it?

The Christian school has a right to its own rules. If the student is Christian, then the rules need to be followed, despite cultural practice.

It is private school. They have their own rules. Deal with it. Cut his hair or change the school. As simple as it is.

Christian schools are weird

These schools are disgusting.

Melburnians urged to wear masks as Victoria records 288 new coronavirus casesVictoria records a record number of coronavirus cases with 288 new COVID-19 cases diagnosed since yesterday, the largest daily increase of the pandemic so far. The headline is not correct, I accidentally watched that little piece, the advice is that people in a hotspot should consider wearing a mask. I say accidentally bc this whole thing here in Australia is a great big nothing, 27 million people, is it 200 deaths or less? Investigations everyday ‘we never hear the outcomes ! make it menditary!
