Labor appears to have fended off a concerted effort by independents and the Liberals in the seat of Melton, but complicated preferences mean the result might not be known for days. VictoriaVotes

Labor appears to have fended off a strong challenge from independents and the Liberal Party to retain the west suburban seat of Melton.

Labor’s primary vote slipped backwards in the 2014 and 2018 elections in the traditionally blue-collar seat, as a fast-growing population on Melbourne’s fringe put a strain on roads, transport, hospitals and schools. Labor’s margin in Melton fell to 4 per cent in 2018 with a primary vote of 34.9 per cent, but won the seat on preference flows. On the first count, Labor polled 38.1 per cent of Melton’s primary votes and the Liberals 24.5 per cent.

McGhie said he did “reasonably well” with multicultural groups in Melton, whom he courted during his four-year term, and believed enough voters were “satisfied that things were being done” in the electorate, such as the forthcoming Melton hospital, level crossing removals and new schools.

Victorian Liberal Party going ‘Labor-lite’ made them look ‘weak’Sky News host Andrew Bolt says the Victorian Liberal Party going “Labor-lite” made them look “weak, second hand and unprincipled”. “Me saying the Liberals should be more Liberal and not more Labor, it looks like a recipe for suicide, I'm told, given where the media is,” he said. “But being more Labor sure hasn't worked for the Liberals and what's the point of being in politics anyway if you just fight for someone else's principles and not your own.” Agree 💯 per cent. Hilarious...Bolt and Sky News don't understand that as Australia has compulsory voting all the normal people get a say not just nutjobs in Texas as they have in the US...keep talking while Albo just reset relations with China, the Voice and IR...
