'The often-glossed-over reality is that it's hard for Australia to be a meaningful strategic partner to a country that thinks it can bully its neighbours on the basis of confected territorial claims,' Tony Abbott says.

Mr Keating blamed "the phobias of a group of national security agencies" for running Australian foreign policy in a way that damaged the national interest.

"It is the national interest and its long run trajectory which should guide our hand and not the nominally pious belchings of 'do-gooder' journalists who themselves live on leaks of agencies unfit to divine a national pathway – organisations which lack comprehension as to magnitude or moment or the subtleties and demands of a dynamic international landscape.

The remarks set off a free-ranging debate over how to deal with China, as Labor increased its attacks on the way Mr Morrison was handling the relationship. Foreign Minister Marise Payne said the Australian government was very concerned about the increasing levels of violence in Hong Kong and emphasised support for the "one country, two system" approach and the protection of basic rights.

'A lot to disagree with' in Keating's speech on China | Sky News AustraliaThe US Studies Centre's James Brown says it is 'classic Paul Keating' to suggest the debate surrounding China's rise has 'degenerated' in Australia. \n\nFormer prime minister Paul Keating accused the media of stirring up 'hysteria' in its reporting on the rise of China.\n\nMr Brown said it was worthy to “acknowledge Keating’s commercial linkages to China” and argued there was a lot to “disagree with in that speech”. \n\nThe global economic superpower was in focus at a strategic forum in Sydney, amid growing concerns about Australia's worsening diplomatic ties with Beijing. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia Lets see..mm Sky News or Paul Keating. Who has the credentials to speak with authority. Mr Keating spoke for him self ego views contrary to the facts on the ground. His views were not appropriate to the democratic world. Me thinks Paul needs to toddle off to Vanuatu, Solomon’s and Fiji and have a look at the intervention of China in those countries, the work undertaken, the Chinese involvement in infrastructure, the telecommunications etc, I’ve seen it’s a worry.
