Rain and gale force winds are pummelling a stretch of West Australian coastline in the state's north with Tropical Cyclone Damien expected to make landfall later this afternoon. It will be the strongest cyclone to make landfall in the region since 2013A red alert is in place for areas in WA's Pilbara region which is bracing for severe, destructive winds, torrential rainfall and storm surges after Damien intensified overnight.

James Ashley from the Bureau of Meteorology said the latest projections had the system crossing the coast as a category three on Saturday afternoon about 2:00pm"give or take a couple of hours"."We're expecting it to cross as a severe cyclone, a category three, still a chance it could reach category four before crossing the coast, and then it will start weakening as it interacts with the land," he said.

"We're already seeing gale force winds at Karratha airport and along the coast of the central Pilbara."
