Chinese-language signs didn't change voters's minds, AEC says

Controversial Chinese-language signs saying that the "correct way" to vote was Liberal cannot be proved to have swayed voters, the Australian Electoral Commission claims.

The elections of Josh Frydenberg and Gladys Liu are being challenged over these signs that appeared in their electorates. The AEC admitted "it is possible" that voters in Chisholm and Kooyong had read the signs or were told about them by someone who read the sign, but said the petition failed to show that people changed their votes.

The Chinese-language signs appeared in front of at least 29 booths on polling day in Chisholm and Kooyong, and at some, the Liberal Party signs appeared next to official AEC signs.

How can that be proved?!

Bullshit!!!

Unbelievable! So it's ok to make mislead & deception as basis of democracy.

They should prove that. They would have to prove that all election advertising has no influence. auspol

Bull crap

How incompetent are those voters who can't read or speak English even after becoming Australian citizens, I wonder!

Chinese people are smart, they don't read signs and immediately obey, same as all Australians who vote. When I vote I don't listen or read any of the garbage politicians put out, they all lie anyway. I make up my mind by reviewing the previous years of what they have done.

What was the point of the signs then? If signs don’t work BAN THEM ALL

I thought we were in a country called Australia..if you live here you vote the Australian way..not the Chinese or any other nationality way..FFS! When are we f going to wake up!

The precedent has been set. All political candidates for future elections will be able to use the colours of the AEC to advertise and confuse susceptible voters. It is a manipulation of the democratic process.

Did AEC do a proper & thorough investigation to arrive at such a conclusion that would hold up in a court of law?!

I call bullshit on the sad and obviously corrupt AEC. They should be ashamed. 🤮🤬

How would they know? Have they been canvassing Liberal party voters! auspol

Such a BLATANTLY misleading headline by putting ‘AEC says’ at the end.

Oh of cause it didn't! Why would they have hung it up there if they didn't believe it would change voters minds!

It was deliberately misleading. That should be all that matters. My questions:- 1) How were they able to copy AEC banners in advance of polling day? 2) How much 'lead time' did they have to replicate the banners, translate lies into Chinese etc. 3) Who did the banners & when? 4) Did someone at the AEC leak info to the Gladys mob in advance? Seems the AEC is determined to undermine itself. They were the last Australian institution that we had confidence in. Sigh.

Federal Court urged to dismiss case against Frydenberg, Liu | Sky News AustraliaThe Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has urged the Federal Court to dismiss cases against Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and Liberal MP Gladys Liu after they were each accused of using official AEC branding in mandarin election signs.\n\nComplainants argued signs deliberately misled voters by replicating official AEC branding.\n\nThe case against Mr Frydenberg was filed by his unsuccessful Independent challenger Oliver Yates who is seeking to force a by-election in Kooyong.\n\nThe AEC argued it was impossible to know whether voters changed their ballot based on the signs.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia JoshFrydenberg GladysLiuMP Of course they want it thrown out. They did nothing on the day of the election when it was reported so better for them if the court doesn't suggest they were completely incompetent. 'Write what you want': Stuart bites tongue on grand final callThe Raiders coach refused to comment on the match-defining play, saying he didn't want to be accused of unsportsmanlike behaviour | app85 app85 His team couldn’t score It wasn’t 6 again - so it was the right call poorly handled. If Canberra score from that - then THAT is the wrong outcome. As for Bias they put our halfback in the SinBin . Thanks refs Grow up everyone app85 Obviously a bigger man than the majority of Roosters fans who booed Jack Wighton receiving the Clive Churchill medal. app85 Sin bin was the wrong call. Last tackle was the right call. Raiders had their chances but they couldn’t cross the line in the second half despite playing within an extra man for 10 mins. As a neutral, I didn’t think the Raiders were dudded at all. Wasted opportunity if anything.
