Don’t take migrant communities for granted or, worse, insult them – and don’t ignore your base. | OPINION by Alan Mascarenhas auspol ausvotes

Late last year, I received a phone call from a prominent Chinese community leader and businessman in north-west Sydney. I’d met him while running as Labor’s state election candidate for Epping in 2019.

Anecdotes these may be, yet they ring true for any Labor campaigner who helped win the seats of Bennelong and Parramatta last Saturday. Given local demographics, there is no other way to explain what looks to be a significant voting realignment in north-west Sydney. Following intensive attention, including a personal letter to voters from former prime minister Kevin Rudd, Labor increased its vote in Carlingford by up to 13 per cent and made history by winning all three booths. There was much talk this year of voters punishing Labor for preselecting candidates in western Sydney from more elite areas of the city.
