ASPI executive director Peter Jennings says China is “by far the biggest threat not only for cyber hacking and spying but also human intelligence”.

In the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation’s annual threat assessment, director-general Mike Burgess revealed there was an increasing number of spies operating on Australian soil as well as the rising threat of right-wing extremists. Mr Jennings told Sky News ASIO “will never say so but I think probably China amounts to 80 per cent of the caseload of our intelligence agencies at the moment”.

“I believe ASIO is watching a number” of right-wing extremist groups “very closely”. “One of the differences of these extremist groups is they are now joining together and seeking inspiration from each other internationally through the internet," he said. “I think it is perhaps enabling very small groups of extremists in Australia to feel that there is a bigger global movement to which they belong.
