Ross Babbage says in a time of peace for the West, China’s ultimate goal is to divide the West and, long-term, wants to supplant the US as the chief global power. TheBoltReport

Former defence and intelligence official Ross Babbage says a “long-standing theme” throughout history playing out now is China “trying to undermine” the United States and its closest allies. Speaking to Sky News, Mr Babbage said in a time of peace for the West, China’s ultimate goal is to divide the West and, long-term, wants to supplant the US as the chief global power.

He noted that in these division attempts, Beijing is trying to encourage the Australian public and decision-makers to be more sympathetic to the Chinese position, while masking the “nasty” parts of their society such as human right abuses. Mr Babbage said the communist nation has been spreading disinformation to change attitudes towards the issues in Hong Kong and the South China Sea, as well as commencing cyber and espionage operations against Australia.
