Telling my children, aged four, eight and 10, that they would be returning to school and kinder next week was a tough gig to sell, writes Marisa Black | OPINION

– balancing the competing needs of getting children back in the classroom without overwhelming the healthcare system.

Telling my children that they would be returning to school and kinder next week seemed a bit of a tough gig to sell.Despite my own concerns, I dug deep, mustering all the enthusiasm and reassurance I could. The medical consensus is that most children don’t become that unwell when exposed to COVID-19 and that any delay in returning to school poses a further risk to their wellbeing.

But it is still difficult to look my children in the eye and tell them they will be fine. The weight of the responsibility for my unvaccinated four-year-old, who definitely does not understand about social distancing, is even greater. However, what I have come to see after talking with my children is that statistics and promised safety measures only go so far. For the past two years, they have learnt to fear this virus.

Beware the moomoo vibe. Madly obsessive older mother of one covid19vic

If your 10 year old kid is reciting case numbers and saying they should wait until it settles down its probably more a reflection of what you've been telling them and anxiety you've cultivated over the last 2 years.

I demand that the government employ enough teacher so all children can be personally home schooled one on one. The teachers can also do some vacuuming, cooking and cleaning during free periods

Telling the 45 year old me that I have to go back to work of Monday was a 'tough gig' too.... I'd rather stay home watching Netflix all day.....

Marisa loves fear.

Children who are afraid to return to school? That’s bad parenting.

Couple of entitled kids on their way up. Do as your told you little rats

Is school needed? Most parents seem to use it as day care… what are they learning? Maybe get back to the basic read the bible 😁

Marissa Black … what an useless article….writing of your own uneducated fears and naming it on your children. No wonder The Age’s circulation has gone down the gutters

No children have died of Covid in Australia over two years. The media and dopey parents have fostered a kind of fear porn. In Australia one hundredth of 1% of the population has died. 0.01% Anyone in Grade 6 should be able to do the maths. Dopey AUSTRALIA.

Certainly not representative of the vast majority of people I know

You don’t have to farming sell it to them…. You just tell them. Who wears the pants in your shit hole woke household?
