A young child was pulled from the burning building and taken to hospital in a serious condition but died shortly after. 9News

The blaze broke out at about 12.30pm today at the intersection of Clauscen and Nicholson Streets in Fitzroy North.A fire broke out today at a public housing block in Melbourne.All other residents have been evacuated safely and are accounted for.

A video taken at the scene shows a man escaping the building from the third floor, down a ladder held by firefighters.
