Food delivery platform UberEats acknowledged the need to improve the safety of delivery riders as the NSW government faces pressure to cover them under its workers compensation and occupational work health and safety laws.Law academics, unions and NSW MPs have also called for the extension of Chapter 6 of the NSW Industrial Relations Act to cover food delivery riders.
Hungry Panda said it was "looking to improve safety for our delivery people". One of its riders was killed in late September.
First priority? Safety legislation for training, lights, reflective vests and PPE. ...and... Build separate bike lanes! NSW LNP have been fighting against Clover Moore's SYD bike infrastructure for years. This is the f'kin result! Otherwise, make them drive registered scooters!
Make it illegal to deliver on push bikes or scooters for that matter. I’ve seen two stack at round abouts this week. Are these guys even here on valid visas? Perhaps just clean up the industry first.
That’s more than COVID death!
Is it because of harsh & oppressive pay rates that they ride like kamikaze agents - hurtling down the footpaths at velodrome pace or weaving around the roads in reckless oblivion to the vehicles surrounding them. It's no surprise they can't carry insurance.
The riders are kamakazi & dangerous. I'm scared to drive pass them. They're unpredictable.
Also, these food deliveries 'drivers' / cyclists are a hazard to the pedestrians. Should have consequences on the delivery companies if they ride their eletric bikes on a footpath.
They ride all over the place on bikes. In & out of traffic. I nearly had a head on with one when he came flying around a corner on the wrong side of the road. Lucky I was slowing to turn left because he had no idea. Puts his hand up to say sorry, as I’m having heart palpitations
this is great! however 5 die and the govt is acting ( which it should) 1.6 women die every week at the hands of a male and we are still waiting for direct action :(
Get the drone deliveries happening already!!
