Susan Clarke has worked at a Tasmanian opportunity shop for 16 years and has never seen so many donations — but it's not all good news.The Hobart City Council has scrapped its free disposal of landfill waste for charities this financial yearOp shops across Tasmania are once again being inundated with trash, mostly from COVID-19 lockdown clean outs.
"It's too heavy and we couldn't afford to take it away and so we were inundated with donations over that time ," Ms Clarke said. The charity, like many others, also does not have the resources or water bill relief to wash dirty clothing.Volunteer Vanessa Clarke said it was an upsetting situation. St Vincent de Paul Society chief executive Lara Alexander says the charity has moved donation bins inside stores to decrease waste dumping
"As far as Vinnie's is concerned, we're really heartbroken when we need to spend money going to the tip. It's not right, it shouldn't happen."Ms Alexander said there was no one area in Tasmania that was worse than another with op shop rubbish dumping.She said different waste disposal initiatives applied across the state for charities.
AgentSm08557869 Donate gear, some expensive. Power tools, electric guitars, restored rare pushbikes etc etc . Near never makes the shelves. Many stores full of decades old styles, anything decent on sold to dealers or staff first choice. Jeans etc. 70% shoppers many areas park in new cars.
They are not really a charity.. they function purely as an agent between govt and public... and take a sizable percentage cut in the process. Not wanting your goodwill emphasizes this fact

Everyone using being stuck at home to get spring cleaning done they neohave time for 😜🤪
Council should help the charity and wear the landfill cost to clear the excess. The waste would be going into household bins, hard rubbish or illegally dumped otherwise which council would have to manage at cost to ratepayer anyway. Burden shouldn't be shifted to charities
Easy fix, remove all collection bins. Surely the councils can help out and remove the bins to the tip? 👍
