Western Australia could finally begin on a cautious path towards reopening its hard border — but it remains to be seen what changes might be made. 9News

could finally begin on a cautious path towards reopening its hard border — but it remains to be seen what changes might be made.

The State Disaster Council's meeting today could see the notional wall cutting WA off from the rest of the country removed. Police Commissioner Chris Dawson yesterday admitted the situation in Australia was "changing for the better"."Tomorrow I'll be attending the State Disaster Council and no doubt we'll have further discussion there," he said.advice from Chief Health Officer Dr Andrew Robertson will be discussed by the council today — but it stays secret until the government works out what to do with it.

Still, the pressure to open up to the rest of Australia — excepting Victoria — is increasing, as more Western Australians trapped on the wrong side of the border reveal their pain.

Berejiklian pressures fellow premiers to lift hard borders with New South Wales | Sky News AustraliaPremier Gladys Berejiklian has urged her Queensland and Western Australia counterparts to lift their hard borders to New South Wales as the state records just one new local coronavirus case overnight. \n\nThe premier confirmed the case was linked to a known cluster in Lakemba and the infected person was already in self-isolation. \n\nMs Berejiklian said she appreciated Queensland will make a border announcement the night before the state election, and hoped it was a “positive announcement”. \n\n“Because residents in your state, in Queensland, in New South Wales and across the nation are suffering as a consequence,” she said. \n\n“I also urge the Western Australia premier to do likewise because there’s no reason why New South Wales resident shouldn’t be welcome by the states.\n\n“It has been, for myself and our agencies in New South Wales, an acute sense of frustration that the vast number of state premiers have chosen to lump New South Wales and Victoria in the same category over the course of the last few months. \n\n“Now that is an incorrect assumption and I’m disappointed that occurred.” \n\nMs Berejiklian also revealed the state was continuing to monitor the coronavirus situation in Victoria and the government would stick to its current border stance at this point in time. \n GladysB How about opening to Victoria GladysB Oh but she is keeping her closed from Victorian's!!!!! Hypocritie!!!!!! GladysB No chance they are socialist labor states that are “keeping people safe” 🤪

WA hard borders is an 'incredibly confusing' and 'arbitrary system': Human Rights Watch | Sky News AustraliaHuman Rights Watch Researcher Sophie McNiell says Western Australia's hard border is 'an arbitrary system' that is 'incredibly confusing'.\n\n'We interviewed 17 people who had their applications to enter WA rejected, many of them numerous times, one woman seven times despite the fact her mother was ill in hospital,' she said.\n\n'Part of the confusion is there are not enough resources going into this - the West Australian police are managing this.\n\n'There's no formal review process if your application is rejected... there desperately needs to be more transparency.'\n\nMs McNiell noted people who apply on grounds of employment are, on the whole, gaining approval more quickly than those applying on compassionate grounds.\n\nShe argued many people became unemployed as a result of the pandemic and if the borders were in place because of a public health emergency, then it shouldn't matter if one was employed or not as to the risk of bringing COVID-19 into the state.\n\n gee, that was strong...what is it with our piss weak human rights people..pathetic Only to people who watch Sky News or read the Murdoch press. Most of us have a pretty good handle on it. It matters to McGowan if you are coming into WA to bring money into the State. If it's on compassionate grounds, he's not interested as there's no money in compassion!
