Brisbane's CBD now connected to Gabba as Cross River Rail reaches new milestone

Brisbane’s CBD is now connected to the Gabba by train tracks beneath Brisbane River, marking the latest milestone for the Cross River Rail project.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey announced on Sunday more than 3 kilometres of tracks had been laid in each direction between the future Albert Street and Woolloongabba stations. “This is a huge milestone for the project – and for south-east Queensland – as we continue to make progress on Queensland’s biggest rail project,” he said.

“What we’re seeing here today is the track that will move our growing population, footy fans and future Games goers once Cross River Rail is operational.”He said about 60 workers were involved in completing this stretch of tracks in the twin tunnels.“The work going on beneath the CBD and the river itself to build Brisbane’s new underground is incredible, and I thank all the workers involved for their efforts,” he said.

“All up, crews laid about 385 tonnes of rail between the two future stations, setting about 9400 blocks in roughly 2800 cubic metres of concrete.Bailey said work on the mechanical and electrical components in the completed section had now begun.

Grim milestone as Australia’s aged care homes mark 4,000 Covid deathsDeadliest year of the pandemic so far has seen restrictions ease, staffing pressures surge but vaccinations provide hope It would be interesting to know how many elderly aged care residents 'recovered' from Covid only to fade away & die in the weeks & months that followed - those who were expected to live a few more years whose rate of decline suddenly increased post Covid. 'It's been an amateur hour': Farmers say flood advice still being ignored by $14bn Inland Rail projectThe company building the 1,700km Inland Rail track says the project will help move freight during big rain events, but some farmers say weather-proofing the line could devastate livelihoods. it's been blatantly obvious right from the start that this 'inland rail project' will go the way of every other rail line on the western side of the mountains and become nothing more than a slush fund for corrupt national party politicians to fill their pockets with.
