High-performing teachers will be encouraged to relocate to struggling Melbourne schools through incentive payments up to $50,000. | Exclusive

Teachers willing to work in Melbourne’s most challenging schools will be offered incentive payments of up to $50,000, in a policy that mirrors the Andrews government’s recent cash lure for teachers prepared to relocate to the bush.

Education Minister James Merlino said the financial incentives were part of a $244.6 million package of initiatives to improve the quality of teaching and learning in schools.Advertisement The $244.6 million investment includes $93.9 million for regional and rural schools, announced by the government last month, which also featured large financial incentives for teachers willing to leave Melbourne to teach at hard-to-staff schools in the regions.Mr Merlino said the package was the biggest ever investment in Victoria’s education workforce and would give hard-working teachers the support they deserve.

More than 40 executive principals will be employed in the most difficult school leader roles at metropolitan schools. They will be helped by nine new turnaround teams.$5.6 million to provide training to university graduates and people with experience in the workforce to learn on the job as a teacher, while simultaneously studying for postgraduate teaching qualifications at university.

One executive principal who is working to turn around poor outcomes at a state secondary school said financial incentives to attract quality teachers would help overcome difficulties hiring experienced and highly skilled staff. Mr Mowbray was charged with reversing the struggling school’s fortunes with the help of a turnaround team.He began with simple things: enforcing the school uniform standards and improving the offerings at the school canteen so students didn't head for local shops at lunchtime. Two years later, attendance is improving, as are NAPLAN and VCE results, and the school is attracting staff again.

The non high performing teachers will love that. No really ... should be good for moral during coffee breaks

Purely divisive in its intentions for the workforce.

Why not fix the problems rather than sticking a very expensive band aid over the wound? I’m all for paying teachers more, but not for taking yet another bullet for the Govt.

And with no discipline in these schools, those high-performing teachers will likely burn-out very quickly...

. Children need financial security and parents with a balanced autonomic nervous system (HRV). .

How about just fund schools properly? Stop subsidising private schools with public money.
