Australia's car owners are paying more than $1 billion a year more than they need to because car makers are refusing to share technical information with independent mechanics, according to the competition watchdog.

Shadow Assistant Treasurer Andrew Leigh quoted from a US Auto Care Association report that estimated data sharing in that country saved consumers US$26 billion a year.

It said the same Camry owner would save around $600 on a new set of tyres and new windscreen at an independent mechanic — if the car manufacturers shared the data for recalibration.

hell they make them to sell not to last or fix.. ffffttt... I'm buying a camel next time..

They always do that.......some repairs you need specialised tools or computer codes. ACCC don't understand capitalism, they believe big business should act on the same lines as the Salvos, a non profit organisation.

At last action is being taken, at least I hope. This has been a rort ever since on board diagnostics. It's nothing to do with safety and everything to do with protecting shonky dealers.

So true!! Please restore reasonable pricing and service parameters

The cost of spares is also outrageous. Parts literally cost double in Australia compared with the U.S.
