An Australian-led group of researchers discovers an immunotherapy for cancer can also “wake up” HIV in the body, allowing the immune system to target it again.

An immunotherapy treatment for cancer appears to have the unexpected benefit of flushing out the HIV virus from where it hides in cells, an Australian-led group of researchers has discovered.

The autoimmune disease “switches off” in the face of common antiviral therapies, giving the appearance of having been eradicated. Professor Lewin said it meant the virus could not hide and would again be targeted by the body’s immune system. “This is a really important advance in understanding how to unlock the virus from its hiding place, and that will be a core part of any future strategy,” she said.
