Canberra wants Gladys, sure, but why would Gladys want Canberra?

Will she or won’t she? If Gladys Berejiklian does end up running for Warringah at the next federal election, she will have pulled off the greatest forward-sizzle in recent political history.

Morrison fulminated against the Independent Commission Against Corruption, which has questioned Berejiklian over whether she failed to report a “reasonable suspicion of corruption” by her secret boyfriend, former Wagga Wagga MP Daryl Maguire. It is yet to make its findings. There are several reasons why Morrison would want Berejiklian to run, but they all boil down to electoral arithmetic: the Prime Minister needs NSW to win the next election. He is in trouble and he knows it. If he can piggyback on Berejiklian’s popularity, he will saddle up immediately.

Opportunity and momentum rarely align in politics, and on that reading, perhaps Berejiklian should jump at Warringah while it’s in the offing. At the very least she might wait until December 20, when submissions are due at the ICAC inquiry, and she will have a better idea of what recommendations counsel assisting will make regarding her.
