Genetics company Colossal secures funding to create an 'elephant-mammoth hybrid', saying its technology has the potential to bring back ancient extinct species and restore damaged or lost ecosystems.

It is the elephant in the genomics room: can extinct species be resurrected? One bioscience firm insists they can, announcing its intent to use emerging technology to restore the woolly mammoth to the Arctic tundra.Colossal says its technology has the potential to bring back ancient extinct species and restore damaged or lost ecosystems

"In addition to bringing back ancient extinct species like the woolly mammoth, we will be able to leverage our technologies to help preserve critically endangered species that are on the verge of extinction and restore animals where humankind had a hand in their demise."Woolly mammoths roamed much of the Arctic, and co-existed with early humans who hunted the cold-resistant herbivores for food and used their tusks and bones as tools.

Asian elephants and woolly mammoths share a 99.6 per cent similar DNA makeup, Colossal says on its website.

If we're de-extinctionising, I want to taste a Dodo.

Why?

About time

I think the more important question is can they survive?

Victoria records 473 new local COVID-19 cases as Delta outbreak worsensSo far, 202 of the new cases identified overnight have been linked to known outbreaks. DanielAndrewsMP really is a failure as a premier, a man and a human. Plausible scenario: Vic cases exceed NSW before Dan Andrews annouces re-opening plan. He admits being outwitted by Gladys B and at the 11th hour, just before NSW freedom day he resigns and moves to Sydney. Given the average case load of hundreds per day in the last two weeks and a very high volume of these unlinked, shouldn’t all Victorians stuck in NSW be allowed to come home? Albeit with a -ve PCR test and into home quarantine? It’s ridiculous to keep Victorians in NSW now.
