More than a dozen large NSW towns have a 'high risk' of running out of water and the quality of supplies in some areas is deteriorating as the state's big dry intensifies | p_hannam

More than a dozen large NSW towns have a "high risk" of running out of water and the quality of supplies in some areas is deteriorating as the state's big dry intensifies.lists the north-west town of Bourke as at "very high" risk. Other big centres, such as Orange and Tamworth, are described as "high risk".

"Inflows are lower than under the previous drought of record in these valleys," it says, adding there is "potential for significant algal blooms and fish deaths as weather warms [with] continuing low flows."The report also noted that according to the Bureau of Meteorology, November has "particularly strong chances of being much drier than usual".

Critics, though, have pointed out some of those measures had been identified previously by Infrastructure NSW as priorities. "The sad part is there are some things that the government could do right now to preserve the remaining amount of water for as long as possible - there have been some positive announcements," he said.

I'm already doing that. Lots of us on rainwater (collected via our roofs) are trying to eke out our water rather than being profligate with it and having our river depleted by trucking water to our property. We watch as our trees die. Well at least the soil salinity has declined with lower aquifer levels. That argument can be put to bed now. These aquifers must have a balanced level..... Well folks i now demand the ABC suggests a secular fartwa for Tim Flannery to stop using the phrase 'Even the rain that does fall won't be enough to fill our rivers and streams' ? any takers?. Yes for the Twitter Police i spelt it 'fartwa' on purpose, so ST*U auspol
