Times are tough enough in the Darling River town of Wilcannia without losing the game the players look forward to each week.

For keen rugby league player Owen Whyman, times are tough enough in the Darling River town of Wilcannia without losing the game he looks forward to each week. The ORL had hosted two teams in each of Broken Hill, Wilcannia and Menindee in past years, but this year looked to lose four of themSome players have enrolled in an Albury competition, an exhausting and expensive 20-hour round trip

"They took the water away, the river, and … the last thing we need is no football around," Mr Whyman said.In past years, there have been two teams each in Broken Hill, Wilcannia and Menindee, but as the season loomed this year it looked as if four clubs would fail to field a team.

Mr Whyman played in a new combined Wilcannia side at the weekend in one of two games organised by the Country Rugby League as a last ditch effort to whip up registrations and kick-start a 2019 competition. It was intended to be a seven-a-side game between the Wilcannia Wiimpatjas and the Menindee Yabbies, but ultimately there were enough players for the full 13 at both ends.Rugby league a social lifeline

Contract debacle that left rugby vulnerable in Folau stormRaelene Castle could be on the verge of a massive, if costly, victory in the Israel Folau saga. But the administrator's missteps will not be overlooked. geerob ...Folau will win this at law and will be a significant benchmark case in regards to freedom of belief and expression; if people think that a superstitious being has it in for someone based on what they do then so be it; who cares geerob I remain confused. Not so much by the story (the absurdity of that is clear!) but why news agencies keep using Vicar of Dibley photos when writing about this story - is it a Christian thing? geerob So a clusterfuck all round IzzyFolau raelenecastle

Marquee my words: Losing the big bucks will save rugbyThe game may have to take a very big haircut in the next round of negotiations for broadcast rights, but there is an upside to that. Peter_Fitz Old talks about how good it was in my day The reality is this will lead to a weaker Aus Comp as players move off shore earlier or choose to go to other codes from the start Peter_Fitz ...sounds like your calling for a socialist revolt but for rugby; kill off the wealthy and powerful and give the game back to the proletariat?: You can't manufacture talent and at present we don't have enough of it, a drought of sorts... Peter_Fitz assholery bottom line is there are too many big time sports and not nearly enough people for australia to be successful on the international stage in anything anymore between union league afl football cricket athletics and swimming it’s just too much for a nation of 25 million

Key Folau relationship on the rocks as end looms with rugbyIsrael Folau and manager-to-the-stars Isaac Moses go back 16 years but the football star's defiant behaviour could be driving a wedge between them | geerob geerob God will send IzzyFolau a new manager or alternatively it’s God’s way of testing Izzy. Either way it win for Izzy’s faith geerob Deviant would be a better description. Jesus hardly mentioned homosexuality (and arguably was mis-translated), yet Folau (who spends a lot of time in the dressing room) is obsessed. Must not covert my neighbour's ass, indeed! geerob Georgina! This is just Isaac Moses PR! Any more Matt Toomua PR?
