Bolivian opposition Senator Jeanine Anez has declared herself the country's interim president after former president Evo Morales and his vice president went into exile in Mexico

Bolivian opposition Senator Jeanine Anez has declared herself the country's interim president after former president Evo Morales and his vice president went into exile in Mexico.Ms Anez, until now Senate vice president, said the constitution allowed her to become head of state after the president, the vice president and the presidents of both chambers of parliament had stepped down.

Mr Morales announced his resignation on Sunday following nationwide protests against alleged fraud in Bolivia's October 20 elections. The leftist president had claimed an outright victory against his centre-right challenger Carlos Mesa. She said the lack of a quorum was due to the absence of legislators from Morales' MAS party, which has a majority in parliament. But Mr Morales called her announcement"the most disastrous ... coup in history."
