Blood taken for donation and pathology tests will be used to try to measure the nation’s rate of hidden coronavirus infections

, with thousands of cases potentially missing from the official tally.and will see blood samples from across the nation tested for coronavirus antibodies.

Professor Kristine Macartney, director of the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance, said targeted testing had been key to the nation’s success to date. But she also warned against any complacency.“Australia's situation stands out as an absolute pinnacle amongst the globe in how we have been able to suppress,” she said.

“They won’t pick up infections that are really recent, so in the last week or two, but they'll pick up infections that occurred before that,” he said. The person that initially gave the blood would not be identified, even if they were found to have coronavirus antibodies, he said.“We're testing them anonymously,” Professor Kaldor said. “So there's no link back to the individual person apart from knowing their age, sex and postcode.The national surveillance plan advises against large-scale testing of people without symptoms for current infection, except for limited at-risk groups including health and aged care workers.
