Sky News contributor Nicholas Reece says “I think it’s a day of great shame for Australia,” following Monday’s announcement General Motors will axe iconic brand Holden after 72 years of operation in the nation. GM International Operations Senior Vice President Julian Blissett released a statement explaining financial woes have led to the demise of Holden.

The shutdown is expected to cost at least 600 jobs as General Motors ceases making vehicles suitable for Australian roads. It comes three years after local manufacturing ended when the Holden plant in Adelaide was closed. "It’s not just the end of a great Australian business but it’s the end of an era I think," Mr Reece told Sky News host Peta Credlin. Image: Getty

Repurpose these GM factories in Australia & NZ.. coronavirus

You clowns. This has been coming for months. GM sold Opel to Peugeot so no longer had source of competitive passenger vehicles.

It’s shame that they were sold to GM greedy & useless who build rubbish.

The Libs cut $300 million in annual subsidys to General Motors, triggering the demise of car manufacturing here...... but are spending an extra $30 billion on inferior subs, because they can be partially built here. Rocks in their heads

The moment Opel pulled out of Australia after spending millions on their launch was the moment Holden became a Dead Man Walking. They haven’t built a decent 1st World car this Century and what they built prior to that was nothing more than Mutton Dressed as Lamb.

Yes Nicolas a great day of shame for greedy unions. RIP Holden

Why is Nick'Harvey Weinstein' Reese allowed on Sky?He`s shown time and time again that you wouldn`t let him near your teenage daughter, but you keep giving him a voice.Shame on Sky for allowing this feminist 'ally'on.

Bottom line is the cost of manufacturing vehicles in Australia was far too expensive. Wages and benefits that worker's enjoyed made the cost even more ridiculous.

Even bigger day of shame is when the LNP get elected in and ruin this country.

Holden exit was preordained when Tony Abbott turned off the corporate welfare tap courtesy of the taxpayer. Same deal with Mitsubishi and Toyota. These carmakers’ “loyalty” to the Australuan market and their staff only lasted as long as the subsidies

The Unions and the Greens achieved what they wanted - destroying global corporations. Well done.

Production line workers getting $120k p/y need to be subjected to the reality test of work. These workers weren't highly skilled, they were given these massive $ boosts by greedy unions, who have now made them all redundant. Well down unions, u fucked up another industry.

Sadly Holden and GM treat the Australian people as mugs and got what they deserved

GM has taken Australia for a 'ride' over decades - the subsidies they were given!

Manufacturing jobs are apparently lost because Australian workers want high wages and better lifestyle than other countries. How's your wage and lifestyle when you are unemployed? 🤔💰 Holden GM skynews FirstWorldProblems

Nicholas_Reece remember the start of the downfall of the car manufacturing in Australia was Labor scum DougCameron51 and his boyfriend SenKimCarr and the thugs of the union they controlled.

Holden (& other Australian car manufacturers) basically worked under an unsustainable public/private/union partnership. The company & unions made money, the taxpayer & car buyers paid the bills. Australia’s loss. With an efficient productive structure we’d still be making cars.

Great shame. Giver me a break. Just another manufacturer that bailed because of Labor green policies increasing power prices. Union greed and worker inflexibility over 30 to 40 years. So please spare me your sorrow Reece when it was your left wing gangs that caused it.

Given that there is no longer vehicle manufacturering in Australia the government should now scrap all laws around vehicle parallel imports. The aussie buyer has been getting reamed with vehicle costs compared to other countries for years.

Good brands remain if they evolve and innovate. Holden didn’t. Cya.

It’s been on the cards for years so people shouldn’t be surprised....

What a load of codswallop! 'The shutdown is expected to cost at least 600 jobs as General Motors ceases making vehicles suitable for Australian roads. ' Any vehicle suitable for North American roads will do very nicely on Australian roads

if you are not driving a Holden and are outraged then please don't complain

All Holden had to do was make a Car the us Aussies wanted to buy. Every business lives and dies by its bottom line. I liked the fact we tried to bale them out over many years. But the truth always catches up. GM never gave a shit about Australia. AND I just bought one, :(

Thanks Joe!

It was sad but inevitable. Ford wouldve gone the same way had it not come up with the ranger and fleet deals with the mondeo and fiesta/focus
