Early detection is the key to beating skin cancer, but a national shortage of specialists is of deep concern to advocates
There are only 550 practising dermatologists in Australia and that is predicted to fall to 90 full-time equivalent positions by 2030, according to the national Department of Health. Her father was diagnosed with stage five melanoma at the age of 40 after his health concerns were dismissed by a GP.Ms Coysh was 15 at the time, but the loss propelled her to continue her advocacy work into her adult life. This year she sought help from her GP after detecting a sore patch of skin on the tip of her nose that would not heal.It was a basal cell carcinoma — the most common form of skin cancer and the most frequently occurring form of all cancers.
"We've made an effort to try to increase the amount of dermatology medical students get in their undergraduate curriculum."The ACD is working with the Australian Medical Association to build up training positions, with a focus on rural services to help support GPs and move specialists to country areas."It isn't a big number — we do need more," Dr Baker said.
Our education system seams to want to train dr's to such a high degree as opposed to diversity that is achievable creating more opportunities for people while letting in people from overseas who don't have to meet the same criteria

There have never been enough dermatologists in Australia and the college has been happy with the closed shop. GPs trained in skin cancer diagnose and treat far more skin cancers than dermatologists.
GregHuntMP strikes again. Worst health minister of all time? auspol
I've had melanoma so I understand the importance of regular skin checks, but scaring people about a potential shortage isn't going to solve anything. In rural areas perhaps unskill GPs to at least do skin checks. 🤷♀️
Any GP worth their salt, especially Australian trained doctors, will be capable of conducting a skin check. You don't need a specialist for that. Only if there is something dodgy that is not obviously a problem should a referral be required.
Then go to the local skin cancer clinic or a GP!
Likely all that funnily named flu stuff the media keep shilling.
Mildura's dermatologist is retiring on June 30. He was always fully booked months in advance. Nearest doctor Adelaide or Melbourne.

The way eating disorders are treated in Australia is about to changeOne million Australians live with an eating disorder at any given time and now a residential treatment facility — the first of its kind in Australia — is revolutionising their care. it's not the first residential treatment centre for eating disorders, it's just the only one that's allowed to operate right now because they bribed some politicians. these facilities have proven to be negligent in the past and there is no reason to think this will be different. If you think a 13 bed private facility is going to change the way eating disorders are treated then you don’t know anything about eating disorders. They’re far more prevalent in Australia than many people realise and that level of private care is unobtainable for most.

One morning a week you wingers ffs. _andrew There’s a couple of things you don’t complain about in life. One is a restaurant meal & ask for a replacement another is the garbo’s. There is a high likelihood that the VERY embarrassing contents of your bin will end up strewn over the road for the neighbours to inspect.
