Three years after the MeToo movement exploded around the world, the Australian fashion industry is committed to creating stronger protections for its workers

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them any time.As allegations of sexual harassment and abuse emerged in the international fashion world in the spring of 2017, the Australian industry braced itself.

But that all changed on September 21 this year after two Sydney-based male photographers, who cannot be named for legal reasons, went public on social media with allegations of harassment and improper touching by a male make-up artist on the sets of multiple photo shoots. On September 23, Tri-Anh Nguyen, 25, was charged with four counts of sexual touching relating to alleged incidents in February and April 2019. Nguyen was given bail and will face court for a mention hearing on November 2.

Magazine editors and industry executives, several of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity, say there have always been concerns about #MeToo showing its face in Australian fashion. Some even expressed a degree of surprise that it had taken this long. All agreed action needed to be taken, with many suggesting the Australian Fashion Council was the most obvious body to take the lead.

There are growing concerns across the fashion industry, as in many other sectors, that as the recession takes root, the scarcity of work may lead vulnerable freelancers, who are often young, ambitious and agreeable, to make greater compromises.

Another magazine editor says that while most of the high-end glossies have pretty tight processes on sets, she worries what may go on inside smaller operations, especially when money is tight. "The more budgets are squeezed, the more risk of things happening. And if they're not being paid properly, how do you hold them to account?" she says.

We borrowed money to 'save Australian lives and livelihoods': PM | Sky News AustraliaPrime Minister Scott Morrison has defended his government's budget plan and deficit, saying it borrowed money to save 'Australian lives and to save Australian livelihoods'.\n\n'As I moved through Queensland, the number of people, of businesses and employees and others who would stop me and say to me; JobKeeper, JobSeeker saved my job, saved my livelihood, saved my business - that was the story from one end of Queensland to the other,' he said.\n\n'The Labor Party doesn't even know how this recession occurred. They don't even know how we got into it that's why they have no clue as to how Australia can get out of it.\n\nMr Morrison said Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese wasn't welcome in Queensland, even by his own side of politics.\n\nThe prime minister admitted JobSeeker and JobKeeper support came at great cost and meant the government had to raise funds in the market, but said the markets provided the finance because of the solid balance sheet and management of his government.\n\n'We have taken on a burden of debt to make sure there is a today and a tomorrow and a future in this country for all Australians,' he said.\n\n'And because we came into this crisis with a strong balance sheet, which is recognised by Standard and Poor's, this has enabled our government to help Australians in their time of greatest need.\n\n'If those opposite had been elected at the last election then we would not be seeing that. This country would have been crippled by taxes and fiscal mismanagement before the crisis even hit.'\n ScottMorrisonMP morrisondepression I call bullshit. ScottMorrisonMP If they had not done it we would be long term in even greater debt, because our economy would have imploded. ScottMorrisonMP Sounds just like Queensland is doing to me.
