KPMG Chief Economist Brendan Ryan says there has been an “increase in geopolitical uncertainty” because Australia’s “small open economy is subject to a lot of global pressures”.

Mr Ryan told Sky News “the domestic issues clearly far outweigh the global issues” and the nation’s “net exports contribute about five per cent towards GDP growth”.

“There is an absolute interplay between what is happening globally and how that will filter through to our economic prosperity at the moment,” he said. The economist said governments are now using economic domestic policy as part of their foreign policy, and that “our relationship with the rest of the world through our exports is keeping up growth in Australia”.
